To help you get started, we have listed a quick checklist of things you should do before you start looking to buy your dream home.
The first step in starting your search for a new home is having an idea of your financial situation. Get a handle on your income, expenses and debts, then you will have a much better idea of what you can buy and how much you'll need to borrow.
Get a copy of your credit report several months before you apply for a loan. This is so you can resolve any problems with your credit before your bank sees it. U.S. Federal law ensures that you have access to your credit report. You can obtained a copy from your local credit bureau or any of several national firms that specialize in credit reports.
The down payment is usually expressed as a percentage of the overall purchase price of the home. If at all possible, have at least 20% for a down payment. This will allow you to avoid extra fees(PMI) which will be required by lenders if you don't have that amount. You will also get the best rates if you have good credit and can put at least 20% down.
Get pre-approved for a loan before you begin searching. A pre approved buyer has a far better chance of getting their offer accepted by the seller if they are pre-appoved. This also lets you know how much you can really afford before you fall in love with that perfect house.
